Rye Market Day – Thursday Coach Day Trip
Step back in time and spend a wonderful day exploring Rye, one of East Sussex’s most beautiful and characterful historic towns. With its cobbled streets, medieval buildings, independent shops and centuries of fascinating history, Rye makes a delightful destination for a relaxing day out – and we’ll be visiting on a Thursday, when the town’s popular weekly market takes place.
Perched above the surrounding Romney Marsh, Rye was once an important medieval port and today retains an extraordinary amount of its historic character. Wander through its winding lanes and you’ll discover timber-framed buildings, ancient inns, hidden passageways and picturesque streets that seem made for exploring.
No visit would be complete without a stroll along famous Mermaid Street, with its cobbles, historic houses and wonderfully atmospheric surroundings. Continue into the heart of the old town to discover St Mary’s Church, Church Square and the historic Ypres Tower, part of Rye Castle and a reminder of the town’s turbulent medieval past.
Thursday is Market Day
Our visit has been specially planned for a Thursday, giving you the opportunity to experience Rye on its traditional market day.
Rye’s weekly market has been part of local life for generations and takes place at the Cattle Market, conveniently situated close to the town centre. Browse the stalls and see what catches your eye before heading into Rye itself for more shopping and sightseeing.
Thursday visitors can also discover Rye’s Flea Market, traditionally held at the Community Centre, where you may find collectables, vintage items, crafts, bric-a-brac and unusual treasures.
Explore at Your Own Pace
The day is yours to enjoy as you wish. Browse Rye’s excellent collection of independent shops, antique dealers, galleries and boutiques, or simply wander through the historic streets and soak up the atmosphere.
When it’s time for a break, Rye has plenty of welcoming cafés, traditional pubs, bakeries and tea rooms where you can enjoy lunch, coffee and cake or perhaps a traditional afternoon tea.
Whether you come for the history, the market, the independent shopping or simply the pleasure of discovering somewhere different, Rye offers all the ingredients for a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
Sit back, relax and let Richard Taylor Travel take care of the driving as we enjoy a memorable Thursday in this beautiful corner of East
Sussex.
