Trip Details

Join us for a relaxing day out in the beautiful Suffolk market town of Bury St Edmunds, where history, shopping, gardens, cafés and traditional market stalls combine to make a wonderful
leisure day.

Our visit coincides with the town's regular Wednesday Market, which takes place in the heart of the town centre. The market is
traditionally held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with a variety of traders offering food, produce, gifts, crafts and other goods. Recent 2026 visitors have also enjoyed new food traders at the Wednesday market, making it a great place to browse and pick up something for lunch.

Explore the Historic Town

Bury St Edmunds has a fascinating history and is compact enough to explore comfortably on foot.

The magnificent Abbey Gardens are one of the town's highlights. Covering around 14 acres, these beautiful gardens surround the atmospheric ruins of the medieval Abbey of St Edmund, once one of England's most powerful Benedictine monasteries. The gardens are free to enter and provide a peaceful place to relax, with colourful planting, lawns and historic ruins.

Nearby stands St Edmundsbury Cathedral, overlooking Angel Hill. Visitors can admire the impressive interior, explore the cathedral grounds and learn about the history of the site.

History enthusiasts can also visit Moyse's Hall Museum, one of the town's most fascinating historic buildings. The 12th-century building houses exhibitions covering the history of Bury St
Edmunds, St Edmund, crime and punishment, the Suffolk Regiment and an internationally recognised collection of clocks. The museum is currently open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

Another popular attraction is Oliver Cromwell's House, where visitors can discover more about the life and times of the famous 17th-century statesman.

Shopping & Cafés

The town centre has a mixture of independent shops and well-known names, with the market adding extra interest on Wednesdays.

There is also an excellent choice of cafés, tearooms and coffee shops. Bury St Edmunds' local café trail features more than
30 venues, including independent cafés and traditional tearooms.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of places to stop for lunch, tea or a coffee. Popular choices include No 5 Angel Hill, The Suffolk Carver, Bay Tree Café and Edmundo Lounge.

Traditional pubs and restaurants are also plentiful, including The One Bull on Angel Hill and The Dog & Partridge in Crown Street.

A Relaxing Day Out

Whether you enjoy browsing a traditional market, exploring historic buildings, relaxing in beautiful gardens, shopping or simply enjoying a leisurely lunch and coffee, Bury St Edmunds has something for everyone.

Come and discover one of Suffolk's most attractive historic towns and enjoy a relaxing Wednesday away with us.
