RHS Garden Wisley

RHS Garden Wisley is the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society, located near Woking, Surrey, England. Covering about 97 hectares (240 acres), it serves as a leading center for horticultural excellence, education, and inspiration, attracting around one million visitors each year.

Key facts

  • Founded: Gifted to RHS in 1903 by Sir Thomas Hanbury
  • Location: Wisley Lane, Woking, Surrey GU23 6QB
  • Area: 97 hectares (240 acres)
  • Owner: Royal Horticultural Society
  • Visitor numbers: ~1 million annually

History and development

The gardens originated in the late 19th century as an experimental plot established by businessman and horticulturist George Fergusson Wilson. In 1903, Sir Thomas Hanbury donated the property to the RHS to promote scientific horticulture. Since then, Wisley has grown into a world-renowned showcase of landscape design, plant trials, and innovative cultivation techniques. Many notable designers, including Geoffrey Jellicoe and Lanning Roper, have contributed to its layout over the years.

Features and collections

Wisley encompasses diverse horticultural zones: the iconic Glasshouse with tropical, temperate, and arid habitats; Battleston Hill’s rhododendron plantings; the Rock Garden; and formal spaces like the Jellicoe Canal and Walled Garden. The site also hosts extensive orchards, a Pinetum, and seasonal attractions such as the Exotic Garden and mixed borders. RHS Hilltop, the Home of Gardening Science, opened in 2021, adds research and education gardens focused on wellbeing, wildlife, and world food.

Education and research

Wisley functions as the RHS’s principal center for plant science and horticultural education. The historic Arts-and-Crafts-style Laboratory (built 1916) houses research and advisory teams. Hilltop extends this work with modern facilities for sustainable gardening, biodiversity studies, and public engagement through daily talks and demonstrations.

Sweat Pea Show

Join the National Sweet Pea Society for their early national show – an extravaganza for the senses!  Enjoy the stunning displays of sweet pea competition classes, container grown sweet peas in a huge variety of colours, cut flower displays and sweet pea art.

The exhibition hall at Hilltop will be filled with colour and the wonderful, unmistakable scent from these beautiful flowers.

Visitors can also purchase seeds from one of the UK’s top growers and take part in talks and demonstrations on growing and caring for sweet peas for success in their own gardens.
