Ely at leisure – Historic Cathedral City Day Trip
Discover one of England’s most charming cathedral cities with a relaxing coach day trip to Ely, a beautiful and historic destination nestled in the heart of the Cambridgeshire Fens.
Small enough to explore comfortably on foot yet packed with fascinating history, independent shops, waterside scenery and welcoming places to eat, Ely makes a wonderful destination for an unhurried day out.
Dominating the skyline is the magnificent Ely Cathedral, one of the most impressive medieval buildings in England. Known as the “Ship of the Fens”, the cathedral has stood at the heart of the city for centuries and is famous for its remarkable Octagon and Lantern Tower. Whether you choose to explore inside or simply admire its impressive architecture from the surrounding grounds, it is undoubtedly one of the highlights of a visit to Ely.
Close to the cathedral you’ll find the historic streets of the city centre, where you can spend time browsing a mixture of independent shops, boutiques and familiar high-street names. There are also plenty of cafés, traditional pubs and restaurants where you can stop for morning coffee, lunch or a leisurely afternoon treat.
History enthusiasts may wish to visit Oliver Cromwell’s House, the former family home of one of the most important and controversial figures in British history. The beautifully preserved building offers a fascinating insight into Cromwell’s life and 17th-century Ely.
For a change of pace, wander down towards the River Great Ouse and Ely Riverside. This picturesque part of the city is perfect for a gentle stroll, with attractive waterside views, boats passing along the river and places to stop for refreshments. Depending on what is operating during your visit, you may even choose to enjoy a relaxing boat trip.
With its magnificent cathedral, fascinating heritage, compact city centre and peaceful riverside setting, Ely offers something for everyone. There’s no fixed itinerary once we arrive, so you’re free to spend your day exactly as you wish.
Sit back, relax and let Richard Taylor Travel take care of the driving while you enjoy a wonderful day discovering this delightful Cambridgeshire city.
