Discover Historic Rochester
Dominating the city skyline is the impressive Rochester Castle, whose magnificent Norman keep has stood watch over the River Medway for centuries. History lovers may choose to visit the castle and discover more about the battles, sieges and stories that have shaped this remarkable landmark.
Just a short stroll away you'll find Rochester Cathedral, founded in AD 604 and recognised as England’s second-oldest cathedral. Step inside to admire its beautiful architecture and discover centuries of history within its walls.
Follow in the Footsteps of Charles Dickens
Rochester is particularly famous for its connections with Charles Dickens, who spent part of his childhood in the area and later returned to live nearby.
The city and surrounding Medway countryside provided inspiration for many of his works, and as you explore Rochester you'll discover numerous buildings and locations associated with the celebrated author.
Look out for Eastgate House, the Six Poor Travellers House and Restoration House, which inspired Satis House in Great expectations. Dickens enthusiasts can simply wander the historic streets and see many of the places that influenced his writing.

Rochester’s historic High Street is an attraction in itself.
Lined with attractive period buildings, it offers a wonderful collection of independent shops, boutiques, antique shops and specialist retailers – perfect for a leisurely browse.
When it's time for lunch or a well-earned break, choose from the High Street’s cafés, tearooms, pubs and restaurants. You may prefer to find a comfortable spot for coffee and cake before continuing your exploration.
You could also take a gentle stroll towards the River Medway, discover more of Rochester's historic buildings or simply relax and
soak up the atmosphere.
